"Foothold" ( 3 x 14 )

So, after that extremely epic arc that was the past two episodes, I’m super excited to see where this is going. Of course, I don’t expect this to be all that great, really, but I mean in general. So let’s hit play and see where it takes us.

We’re at the Colorado base (hurrah!) and SG-1 comes back… late. Jackson thought they’d found Kheb, the place Sha’re told him about through the ribbon device, but all they found was rain. They head to the infirmary, and they’re all injected with something (standard procedure) but it knocks them out!?
Just what is going on? Fraiser? Guys?

Teal’c is the first to wake up, and he overhears “Hammond” and “Fraiser” talking to some other figures about invasion and if this is a viable home? Okay, now this is getting  very weird.
Teal’c fakes unconsciousness and, after he’s taken down the hall, takes down the attendant and puts him on the gurney, pushing him away. He manages to get away and grabs a utiity belt before taking down two more of the attendants, whom he stashes into the elevator. He grabs the gurney Carter is on, and shortly thereafter she wakes up.

Teal’c explains to the major what’s going on (namely that there’s been an alien incursion) and they go to a security room with cameras. They were told that there was a chemical spill on the 23rd level, but when they check the cameras there, they’re non-operational. They witness two more aliens come in, and figure that Jackson and O’Neill have also been taken over, or replaced, or whatever.

I think I know what’s going on. Whatever alien thing this is, it wasn’t able to take over Teal’c and Carter because of their respective connections with the Goa’uld – a parasitic race in itself. While Carter makes her escape, Teal’c tries his best to hold off people and allow her time. However, he’s trapped in a room and is quickly knocked out by a gaseous substance.

The scene changes and Carter has successfully escaped. She uses a pay phone and calls… Maybourne!? Why on Earth would she dial up that slimeball? That scumbag? That conniving, wretched, jerkface… Oh, wait, I should probably hear him out. Last resort and all that. She lets him know what’s going on, and walks off.

Meanwhile, Teal’c is now completely strapped down and he doesn’t remember what happened. “Fraiser” tells him that he was affected by the fumes (uh, yeah RIGHT) and they ask him where Carter is. He says he doesn’t know, and really, I don’t think he does.

We’re in D.C. now, and Carter meets with Maybourne (THROW YOUR COFFEE IN HIS FACE AND..) outside NID Headquarters. Turns out that Hammond already called him and told him about the “chemical spill” and… yeah, no. Of course he believes it, but that’s because he’s a slimeball.
She turns to leave, and is apprehended by O’Neill and Jackson (wow, they got there fast). She whirls around and, raising her voice, has this very amazing line:
“Maybourne, you are an idiot every day of the week; why couldn’t you have just taken one day off?!”
You tell him, Carter!
Jackson tries to tell her that it’s the chemical (yeah, yeah) but I still don’t buy it. She eventually agrees to go back to base with O’Neill, Maybourne, and Jackson, but I still have a bad feeling about this.

On the plane out there, she sees O’Neill’s image start to flicker (whoa!) so she grabs Maybourne’s gun (really? He has a gun right there on his holster on a plane? Super smart) and she shoots him, and he’s revealed to indeed be an alien.
Wait, then where’s O’Neill? And is Jackson himself?
She shoots down another airman, also an alien, and… oh man.

The scene changes (level 23?) and we see O’Neill, Hammond, and several others suspended on these bizarre harness things. Oh, that’s gross. He seems to be the only one awake, until a few minutes later, when Major Davis also awakens. They see someone being taken into the room they’re trapped in, and they’re also strung up.

Carter finds a sort of device on them each, which allows them to be disguised as humans. When she puts the device on her palm, it makes her look exactly like Daniel, and when it’s off, she’s back to herself.

In the infirmary, Teal’c is strapped down to a table and WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO JUNIOR?!?! LEAVE HIM ALONE!! What is this!?

Davis and O’Neill manage to get out of their harnesses, and they knock out the imposter Fraiser when she comes in. They take off her device, and the alien is revealed. Carter, now disguised as Jackson, now enters into Level 23 and undisguises herself to talk to Davis and O’Neill. She lets them know what’s going on, and so now it’s a race against the clock.

Carter goes after the alien impersonating Hammond, and after hitting her device, all the aliens are revealed.

O’Neill goes to rescue Teal’c (YEAAAH) and they get the heck out of there! They then start shooting down all the aliens in an attempt to rescue their people. The aliens activated the Stargate and all gather around it, then start going through. O’Neill, Teal’c an Carter shut down the ‘Gate, and suddenly there’s a massive explosion.
The aliens are… gone. Well. That’s unfortunate.

Turns out that the aliens had come along when SG-6 came back through the ‘Gate. In the Hangout, Maybourne joins them (you’re still a slimeball) and lets them know that the other aliens are dead.
For the record, Teal’c would still be entitled to dismember you.

Final thoughts… Okay, that was… um… less than enlightening.

All right, I’m sorry, I just wasn’t really impressed with this last episode. We get off of this great arc, and it actually starts out pretty relevant to it, what with SG-1 having gone off in search of the harsesis, but then we get… alien invasion? It reminded me too much of the season 2 finale with Hathor and all her deception, and we really didn’t need more of that, in my opinion.

One thing I would’ve liked to have seen more of was Carter and Teal’c working together. I mean, we always see Jackson working with Carter, and Teal’c working with O’Neill, but not very often these two, connected in the strangest way, together. I felt it was a lost opportunity, but that’s just me, and because I feel like Teal’c has gotten the short end of the stick the past few episodes.

Of course I kind of predicted this for myself (for every few awesome episodes, there are bound to be a couple disappointments in a season) but I suppose it was interesting to see new technology, a new alien race, and even Maybourne again. Variety is the spice of life, and all that. Still begs the question what they’re going to do with Level 23, now that it’s all… screwed up.

REFLECTION/PREDICTION THINGY
 (I got nothin’.)

O’Neill: What’s the next adventure? “Pretense”?
Jackson: Well, a pretense is an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true.
Teal’c: That sounds almost identical to what we just experienced.
Carter: Oh, god, not more of the same!
